A boatload of Aussies

Booked for an island hopping cruise for a week, we get on our boat to find it chock full of Aussies. Carter and I are the only non-Aussies, apart from the crew. I first heard about this cruise from a friend who was in Croatia last year. Initially I thought a whole week on a cruise would be a bit much, but then came around to the idea, but when I see the boat is full of 22 year old, mainly female Aussies, I start to regret my decision. I think I’m about to live in a sorority house(boat) for a week.

Cruises like this are always a gamble; you don’t know what kind of boat, food, or company you are going to get. Past cruises I’ve done (in the Whitsundays and in Vietnam) have had a mix of nationalities and ages and I was hoping this would be the same. Guess not. I’m quite flabbergasted how we are the ONLY non-Aussies. Feels like I’m back in Sydney! Turns out there’s a group of 10 friends travelling together, and the remaining are smaller groups of friends. There’s a slightly older couple, Mark and Priscilla who are staying in the room across from us and we end up talking to them quite a bit.

In total, there are 36 passengers on the cruise and everyone is friendly and nice, but I feel too old for this crowd. On our rafting excursion (more about this later), two of the girls respond to being asked about their hobbies with: “drinking, um…dancing drunk on table tops occasionally”. …Seriously? What have I done, signing up for a week of this?

Two and a half days in and I’m actually enjoying it. It’s hard to complain when my daily routine consists of: waking, eating breakfast, sun bathing, swimming in the sea, lunch, more swimming, nap, exploring another historic town on a Croatian island. Ahhhh…life is good.
